Jungle cities

January 25 - April 15, 2017

It came as a shock to me to realise that since I was born in 1971,we as humans have destroyed a third of the existing fauna and flora on the planet. As an artist I consider it my duty to use my art to draw attention to the inbalance between culture and nature.

Whispers

Enschede, Netherlands, 2016

“Children growing up in cities no longer know what a wild flower is or why bees are important.  They think it’s bad to come home with torn pants and muddy boots.  I think that it is a shame and that, as an artist, it is my duty to remind our society of the importance of nature.  I can see the virtual rainbow of wild flowers arching between the San Antonio Whispers and the Enschede Whispers.”

Cities like open air museums

Evoking communication and social interaction is Arne Quinze’s biggest artistic driving force. Primarily by means of his large-scale constructions located in public places, he has amazed many a passer-by. Cities like open-air museums: building and realizing attractive cities is a recurring theme in his conviction that our society benefits from being confronted with works of art. Art has a positive influence on the general feeling of wellbeing and gives people the opportunity to open up to different approaches to that, which they are looking at. Turning negative attitudes into positive ones and assuring that people are not afraid to talk to strangers is the exact way in which human relations should evolve. Public art is therefore Arne Quinze's means to achieve this.

Natural Chaos

Natural Chaos strenght lies in the challenge to bring its viewer back to an unspoiled confrontation.  Like the experience often conceived by the powerful beauty found in nature. Leaving you completely dazed by its force. Opening up its viewers perception and making place for a new and fresh reflection.

Arne Quinze strives to intervene in the daily lives of passer-by. This urge to provoke a dialog in modern society arises from the  artists continuously research of differences between cultures. His curiosity to discover the unknown in nature, urbanism and societyes reflects its energy into the composition of the Natural Chaos sculptures. Striving to absolute beauty, balance, coherence.

Stilthouse

Arne Quinze perceives his Stilthouses like human beings. They appear fragile and shaky, only standing on small, narrow legs, and they look as though they might collapse any minute. People possess the same fragility but also an enormous flexibility to adapt to any situation with which they are confronted. It is man's equilibrium that Quinze wants to represent with his Stilthouses. Although supported on thin legs, they keep standing; they survive in every context. An ideal Stilthouse is very tall, as people are always trying to reach and look further. These sculptures keep watch over their surroundings in order to safeguard their existence without taking on the disturbing connotation of surveillance.

Stilthouses strike the balance of protecting themselves while stimulating openness and bring different views and groups in society to the forefront. These are archetypes for people according to Quinze's analysis of how societies are shaped nowadays.

There Is No Chaos Only Structure 14-8-2011

#chaos #work

Chaos

The composition of a Chaos artwork started as a self-portrait; the representation of what's going on in his head. But soon a shift occurred towards an enduring research on the definition of chaos in society. Often these artworks are filled with a mass of small wooden sticks attached to each other, looking enormously chaotic. "There's no chaos, only structure" is a tagline in some of his work expressing his inner self and how he describes his thoughts. To him there is no chaos, everything is structured even in the chaos you find structure. There's no such thing as chaos in Quinze's world or at least not in the sense of how society defines chaos. Chaos does exist, as a form of structure. Chaos is irretrievably linked with life. In life everything is a matter of rhythm. Something without a rigid structure is part of the organic order in life.

My Secret Garden

# mysecretgarden

My Safe Secret Garden

This idea came into being when Arne Quinze let himself be inspired by the impressionist canvasses ‘Les Nympheas’ of Claude Monet. During the creation process he realized he was undertaking a mental journey as it were and got wrapped up in his own world more and more, until he reached the moment in which he discovered his own safe gardens. ‘My Secret Garden’, a symbol for the mind and thoughts of the artist, forms part of the entire My Safe Garden, where My Home My House My Stilthouse resides in. This is a safe gar- den in which all the surroundings and his world are faced with limits. In a Secret Garden everything is hidden and there is no possibility of sharing things with another person. Secret Gardens are always visually empty, because they can only exist in the hidden part of the mind. The fenced-off area stands for everything that cannot be touched by strangers. That is why My Secret Garden forms part of My Safe Garden, it is an element of the entire world of the artist and protects by putting up fences.

Bidonville

Bidonvilles expand further on the study of livability in today's context. Different skyscrapers and dwellings embody diverse forms and shapes but they are still inherent to the same architectural context. Bidonvilles are archetypical houses as a parody on the way people live now. Cities are developing with inexhaustible fervor. Without thought or a vision of sustainability, houses are rapidly built one next to another; the functionality of the buildings, streets, and parks in total in the urban settings are not fully considered. Bidonvilles tranquilize or accelerate this process intentionally and provoke open communication in a society of human interaction.
